A $2020 Tip

Donnie Wahlberg left a huge $2020 tip to his IHOP server on New Year’s Day. He also wrote “Happy New Year” and “2020 Tip Challenge” on his bill for $78. Image of the bill was shared by Wahlberg’s wife, Jenny McCarthy. This follows a waitress in Michigan also getting a $2020 tip with “2020 Tip Challenge” written on the receipt.

Australia’s Fire Dwarfs All Others

While the California fires of 2018 have long been put out and the Amazon fires have been reduced at least, Australia is only in the middle of its fire season. Ongoing heat and drought are expected to fan the flames further. This week, shocking pictures of bright orange skies in Queensland and flames ripping through towns captured the world’s attention. The number of acres torched in Australia dwarfs all other fires from the past two years.

fuboTV Drops Fox RSNs

fuboTV, an OTT streaming service, has dropped the Sinclair-owned Fox RSNs, claiming the rates were “not consistent with fuboTV’s mission to provide value and keep costs low to consumers.” Back in July, Sling TV and Dish (owned by Sling) dropped Fox’s RSNs. Currently, fuboTV is carrying AT&T SportsNet Southwest, NBC Sports RSNs, and other non-ESPN national sports cable networks.

ISN’T THAT TRENDY

Why it matters to you: What new design trends should you follow in 2020?

Every new year brings an opportunity to remake yourself. This is true of restaurants and of people which is why this preview of potential design trends for 2020 is particularly interesting. It features design examples from nine restaurants nationally. While most of you won’t invest in your design/decor the way these restaurants have, there is much you can learn about best practices by following their lead.

For example, Georgie, a restaurant in Dallas, features lots of curved lines to add visual interest in their dining room. It follows a more mid-20th century, deco-luxe style, but looks utterly modern. From the curved bar stools to the sweeping banquets, this dining room oozes high-end charm. Another example is Tuzco in Chicago, where they applied a maximalist approach to décor. They deliver what might be called a gallery wall, where every inch is covered with some visually interesting piece.

Other trends projected to gain steam in 2020 are jewel tones and the return of live plants. No matter what style you favor an update can completely transform your restaurant. It doesn’t have to be a major renovation, but by even replacing wall décor with new items, guests will take notice and feel the update. But as they say, everything old is new again, so you could wait another 20 years and hope your current style comes back in to favor. We suggest you consider staying ahead to remain relevant, but old school will always have its place.

ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH

Why it matters to you: With data breaches on the rise, you must be constantly vigilant about protecting yours.

According to the latest IBM data breach report, the global average cost of a data breach is $3.26 million — up 6.4% from 2017. The average cost for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information is $141. While most restaurant operators won’t bear this cost, when your providers have a breach, they may need to increase their price to address the consequences of that incident. This list on Upserve of data breaches from the past several years reads like a who’s who of national operators.

Take Dunkin Brands breach in 2018 where personal information from the coffee chain’s DD Perks rewards program was compromised in a data breach where third-parties obtained usernames and passwords through external companies’ security breaches. They then attempted to log into some of the DD Perks accounts.

Take head, because the only control you have is by choosing the right vendor to deliver your POS and other sensitive data management functions. Take a quick read of the list of affected operators and what happened. From there you should be able to ask the right questions of your vendors to ensure your data is safe and equally important you aren’t on the hook if they experience a breach. The more you know the safer you and your data will become.
