Coronacrisis: Day 8

THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING

Why it matters to you: Things can get worse, but only if we don’t care for each other.

If you weren’t aware, before the COVID-19 crisis there were nearly 15 million people employed directly in the restaurant industry. Of the total number of working Americans, that number was nearly 10%. Given that most front of the house folks are already out of work and kitchens in most full-service restaurants have slowed significantly, we can assume more than half of the working staff in restaurants are currently furloughed or unemployed.

While we appreciate the costs of this for the folks that are enduring it, the same can be true for the restaurant operators that are also in trouble. But we need to find a balance between preserving the impacted companies and the needs of these folks that are hurting right now.

That is why we are extremely concerned over the exemption of paid time off guarantees for companies of over 500 employees. The lion share of our subscribers work for companies that employ fewer than 500 people and they are now required to pay PTO. These companies are at even more risk from this disruption, yet they are being required to support their staff while huge companies get a break.

Let’s be honest, when you consider the vast wealth held by a company like McDonald’s, it’s hard to fathom that they would fight like hell to block relief for all of these folks that have been suddenly cut loose. Worse, their restaurants are still very much operating with counter and drive-thru service. This only makes it more frustrating that they would actively lobby against accountability for their employees’ well-being.

There are, of course, some silver linings, like the Arkansas landlord that directed his restaurant tenants to pay their employees before they paid their rent. But on whole, this is going to continue to worsen for both management and employees. Our industry had experienced unprecedented growth over the past 25 years; it’s time to admit that run has ended. What comes next will reflect the way we care for each other now.

Over the upcoming few weeks (or potentially months) we will continue to serve our audience, information, insights and best practices to manage whatever comes next. We hope you will join us on that journey.
