TECH: The Four Types of Digital Signage for Bars & Restaurants

How many of you have been approached by a digital signage company promising you the world if you put their product in your place? Plenty to be sure, but the ironic thing is they were all correct. The problem with digital signage, is…umm…digital signage. Meaning no one knows exactly what it is or how it works in the restaurant industry. There are a lot of different ways to skin this cat and this post will aim to demystify signage, so you choose what’s right for you.

DID YOU KNOWS…

Is Mr. Peanut Dead?

Planters is about to kill off its mascot, in this supposed Super Bowl commercial leak. The cryptic video was tweeted from Mr. Peanut’s Twitter account and shows him and two guys driving along in the Nutmobile to the tune of “I Just Died in Your Arms” when things go a little sideways. Gotta wonder how Mr. Peanut tweeted from beyond the grave, though.

Pornhub Sued for Lack of CC

A deaf man has sued Pornhub over a lack of closed captions. The lawsuit claims the popular porn site is violating the ADA. The plaintiff says he “cannot enjoy video content” without captions. Pornhub retorted that it has an entire “closed caption category.” The plaintiff has sued Fox News, the New York Post, and other outlets for similar ADA violations. The post also outs the plaintiff’s porn preferences, if you’re morbidly curious.

Best Employers for Diversity

Employers were identified in an independent survey from a sample of more than 60,000 U.S. employees working for companies with at least 1,000 people in their U.S. operations. Other factors were also considered such as diversity levels among executives as well as diversity indicators such as the existence of a leadership position responsible for diversity. The criteria also took into account whether there was proactive communication on the issue as well as whether a diverse company culture existed. Multinational software corporation SAP came first in the ranking this year with a score of 85.89 out of 100.

DASTARDLY DELIVERY

Why it matters to you: Are you listed in a delivery site that you haven’t approved?

Restaurant operators in Philly have something more to gripe about than just their rough and tumble sports fans. Turns out GrubHub, Postmates, and DoorDash have all been listing restaurants as available without their permission.

Imagine your dismay when an order is called in and you fulfill it and the guy goes to hand you the wrong amount of money? How can that happen? If they have an out of date menu with prices that have changed or are just plain wrong, then it’s a matter that you have to resolve in the moment. Sure the driver is going to pay for the food before he leaves, but what damage is done when the customer is told their price expectation is not valid? Be assured the consumer will at worst blame the restaurant and at best hold it against you pending some future decision to visit your restaurant.

Philly’s Love & Honey Fried Chicken shared an image of a complaint against Grubhub on Instagram over the weekend, threatening legal action if the restaurant’s menu was not removed from the site. While it appears that GrubHub complied, there was plenty of online discussion surrounding other area restaurant operators and the problems they have had with delivery. To say that delivery has hit its apex might not be 100% accurate, but if not, we are close. These types of rogue behaviors are proof the competition is tightening and they are fighting for every customer. We strongly encourage you to look at the various delivery operators in your area and make sure you aren’t listed. You certainly don’t want anyone hijacking your brand to save their own skin.

LEARN ‘EM GOOD

Why it matters to you: Give your staff what they want by investing in formal training.

We should be at the point in our industry where we don’t need to be convinced of the value of training and education. The better trained and prepared your team is, the more productive they are, and the more profitable your business becomes. We have often suggested that you offer on-going education to your managers and key staff. Consequently, we wanted you to know about a new program being offered by The Institute of Culinary Education (ICE). They have developed a new Beverage Studies program with three in-depth courses covering fluency in tasting and serving, effective team and inventory management, and increased professionalism to achieve success in the beverage sector of culinary and hospitality businesses.

Given the immense exposure your operation has to your bar operations, a course like this will give your team the tools they need to effectively execute. It’s an especially good idea for someone you are grooming to ascend to a management role. A program like this will not only educate the management candidate, but it will also infuse them confidence and enthusiasm about their job. This is exactly what Millennial and Gen Z candidates tell us they expect from their employer. It also gives your staff more reason to stick around. Sure, you’ll have to endure a know-it-all employee for few weeks after they’ve completed the program, but you know it’ll be due to their desire to do a better job -- and that sounds like a wonderful problem to manage.
