DID YOU KNOWS…
Social Media Is All Grown Up
Both Instagram and Snapchat have risen to fame by winning over young digital natives before breaking through to the mainstream. According to a recent Pew Research study, 40 and 26 percent of Americans aged 30 to 49 are using Instagram and Snapchat, respectively, these days, making them much less of a parents-free zone than many teenagers might like. Both platforms are no match for Facebook in terms of their reach across all age groups, however, as the following chart illustrates.
Sued for Motorboating
A Tampa Bay restaurant is being sued $1.5 million after being injured from a drag queen’s breast. The plaintiff is claiming she suffered a cervical spine injury from a surprise motorboating session. The injury is permanent, the plaintiff says, as she’s been in constant pain in the two years since the incident.
Have We Gone Too Far?
Here’s an… interesting looking drink. An avocado margarita, made with the usual alcoholic elements and real avocado. It looks like an alcoholic smoothie to us and perfect for the Avocado Mafia when they want to kick back and relax.
CARL’S JR BEGINS ITS QUEST FOR THE EAST
Why it matters to you: Carl’s JR opened its’ first restaurant in NYC to incredibly lackluster reviews.
Have you ever been to a Carl’s JR? Most east-coasters will answer that question with a resounding no. If you have, however, you’ll know it tastes an awful lot like a mash-up of Burger King and other generic fast-food restaurants. That doesn’t bode too well for Carl’s if they expect success on the east coast. So, why expand this way anyway? We’re sure they expect to attempt to score with an “untapped” marketplace for them. This actually means trying to butt into the oldest and most opinionated areas in the country with an alien transplant and almost zero pro-Carl JR buzz.
The NYC location did, however, open to long lines (and protesters) even though the burger-centric location missed the mark on theme and decor (a windowless dining room with pictures of skateboarders and surfers throughout). So, why do these chains feel the need to expand nationwide? We assume it is an attempt to grow their businesses and chase the near unattainable dream of McDonald’s-type dominance but, why bother if you can’t even win a Twitter feud?
TRUMP’S USDA ANYTHING BUT ORGANIC
Why it matters to you: In a strange move, Trump’s USDA withdraws animal welfare rules for organic producers.
Organic foods are supposed to be food produced happier and healthier animals. By definition,
“organic food is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators, and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation.”
So, why would Trump’s USDA change this? What is to be gained? Somehow the USDA has decided that the National Organics Program somehow doesn’t have the authority to enforce regulations relating to animal welfare as a qualification for organic certification. How the National Organics Program doesn’t have the authority overseeing organics productions, we don't know. This ruling comes with almost zero support from the industry’s producers (large and small), so it will be interesting to see what Trump’s USDA has in mind with this withdrawal of a highly supported bill of rules and regulations.
We’re sure it is all a play to go back to the days of the organic label meaning essentially nothing and to dupe the buyer into lesser quality products for more money. It will be truly interesting to see if the withdrawal of these rules has an immediate effect or is turned over, but with so many calling it “indefensible” we doubt it will go unprotested.
