DID YOU KNOWS…
Highs & Lows for Snapchat
Snapchat’s user growth slowed to an all-time low in Q1 of 2018, growing just 15.1% year-over-year and 2.1% from last quarter. That said, Snapchat hit 191 million daily active users, especially among teenagers. Here’s the global breakdown.
Alcohol Sales Growth is Slowing
Sales of beer, wine, and spirits have slowed down a lot over the past two years. Part of it is the abundance of options out there for consumers, but also the number of places (on- and off-premise) that sell alcohol beverages grew more than 100,000 in the last decade.
Mom Serves Kids Literal Bowl of (Pasta) Dicks… Accidentally
Being a parent is hard, but sometimes that challenge turns into hilarity. When her daughter asked for a box of “smiley face” pasta, this young mom didn’t notice what she was buying was… not exactly smiley faces. Apparently, dick-shaped pasta is easily found in the UK. Dem crazy Brits.
BARISTAS ARE WILDLY UNDERPAID
Why it matters to you: Baristas nationwide make less than what most consider a fair minimum wage.
Baristas nationwide are almost never making what most would call a fair minimum wage. In fact, the best barista in the country only makes $14 an hour (before tips). If they were a mixologist or specialty worker of any other kind they’d be making double to triple that as a yearly salary.
So, why is this the case? Partially, we’d say, this is due to the fact that people tend to not want to spend much on coffee. A cup usually ranges from $2 to $8 (on the fussy, super-fancy end) which doesn’t stretch all that far when you take a step back and look at the business of a coffee shop. That fact combined with coffee shop managers generally being paid more than other employees doesn’t leave much for all of the baristas out there. Unfair if you ask us.
The issue with underpaid baristas is very similar to the full-service restaurant issue with their BoH staff being so far underpaid in comparison to FoH staff. The people making the product they are selling get no love, historically, and it has become a real conversation in how to remedy this. Everyone should be able to rest assured that the extremely talent and massively hard working BoH staff is making a living wage while we eat our Wagyu beef tasting menus and sip expensive wine from the comfort of the dining room. Regardless these staff members’ relatabilities to each other, being underpaid shows that we have very real problems in this industry that are long running and must be solved sooner rather than later.
KNOCK KNOCK. WHO’S THERE? IT’S CHIPOTLE…
Why it matters to you: In a recent delivery partnership deal Chipotle has signed with DoorDash.
In a recent large deal straight out of your wildest stoner fantasy, Chipotle and DoorDash announced a delivery partnership available from more than 1,500 Chipotle restaurants across the country.
"Delivery is an important way we are making Chipotle even more convenient and accessible to our customers who want to get Chipotle delivered right to their home, office, or wherever they are," said Curt Garner, chief digital and information officer at Chipotle. "By partnering with a delivery leader like DoorDash, we are making it even easier for customers to enjoy all the real ingredients that make up our delicious food."
Delivery is a massive aspect of succeeding with the Millennial crowd. Considering that they are also Chipotle’s main demographic, it is absolutely crucial that they do so. Expanding delivery seems like a relatively expected move from former-Taco Bell now-Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol. All eyes are on him since taking the reins and so far, he has been proving himself at the helm. Just don’t let this delivery push go wrong!
