As a restaurant operator, this scene from Pulp Fiction scares the hell out of me. The image of a couple of gun-toting crazies jumping up out of nowhere announcing that this is a robbery is the thing of my nightmares.

The problem is, they are right -- no one ever robs restaurants.

Often our locations are the target of burglary because we are known to keep cash in the till, but out right robbery is far less common, especially today with the mix of cash and credit so heavily tilted towards the latter.

Undoubtedly, Tim Robbins character is also right that most restaurants are insured, and that the managers only concern is the assailants don’t “start plugging the diners.” The only thing to do as the manager of any restaurant in this situation is to cooperate and get them on their way as soon as possible and without getting anyone hurt.

The good news is that this 20+-year-old film hasn’t inspired wide-spread copy catting, but it doesn’t make the visual any less terrifying.
